Limitations of Batch Film Feeders
For busy radiology and mammography centers, the cumbersome requirements of most batch feeders waste precious time and interfere with efficient workflow. Typical batch film feeders require up to four steps to load an additional case:
Step 1: Most batch feeders require the digitization process to be halted or paused in order to load new cases. This requirement reduces productivity and may cause reliability problems with the digitizer and feeder because the systems were not designed to be frequently interrupted and restarted.
Step 2: Quite often, additional cases must be loaded on the bottom or back of the stack—difficult at best and even more problematic when many films are already loaded in the feed tray.
Step 3: Films often must be sorted by size. For example, some systems require technologists to load large (24 cm x 30 cm) films on the bottom of the stack and small (18 cm x 24 cm) films on the top. In addition to reducing efficiency and wasting technologists’ time, patient sequencing cannot be maintained.
Step 4: Resume digitizer operation.
