Computed Radiography (CR) VS. Digital Radiography (DR)

In the world of radiology, many wonder about the pros and cons of CR (computed radiography) versus DR (digital radiography.)

It is well-known at this point that analog is on its way out, with digital replacing everything that used to be done via film. And yet, there are still some major pros to using CR over DR, even in this day and age.

Below we’re going to break down the pros and cons of both CR and DR, so you’ll be able to make a more informed decision when the time comes.

Computed Radiography (CR)

The Pros
  • CR costs much less than DR in every aspect. From equipment, install, and ongoing servicing.
  • CR units are compatible with many different X-Ray devices; they are quite versatile in that they’re able to convert many analog units.
  • CR’s can render an image digitally in less than a minute, and once it is done, storage is simple and space efficient.
  • CR is the least labor intensive of X-Ray conversions.
The Cons
  • CR is much slower than DR.
  • CR can’t grant instant gratification when it comes to image quality (unlike DR).

Digital Radiography (DR)

The Pros
  • Digital is replacing analog at a very fast rate, and eventually, it will be harder for those with analog systems to find parts and people trained to use them.
  • If you replace your analog with DR, you most likely won’t even need to remodel your X-Ray space.
  • DR’s can render an image in about 5 seconds.
  • New systems sometimes come with software that is far more advanced than analog.
The Cons
  • DR is far more expensive than CR.
  • DR is labor intensive – install can take up to four days to complete.

At the end of the day, it’s up to your specific needs and desires when it comes to your facility. Eventually, all facilities will evolve to digital systems, just like all technology evolves into a different era every decade or so. Do your research. Weigh your options. And as always, if you have any more questions regarding computed radiography and digital radiography – or you’re simply ready to purchase, you can contact us here.
