DEXA Installation Requirements: Space, Power, Calibration, and Training

DEXA Installation Requirements: Space, Power, Calibration, and Training

A central DEXA scanner can reach the room in one day. That day is not the go-live date. Calibration, a phantom scan, a physicist survey, and state registration still sit between delivery and the first billable study. Room size and power change by model. Do not use one room size for every system.

Quick Answer: Assembly is often one day when the room, the circuit, and the truck path are ready. Calibration and a baseline phantom scan can finish that day or the next day. The first billable scan waits on the physicist, the state radiation program, and a qualified operator. Get the site planning guide for the exact model before you measure.

What are the room and space requirements for a DEXA scanner?

There is no single DEXA room size. The site planning guide for the model on your quote controls the layout. A line such as "about 10 by 12 feet" is shorthand. It is not a plan.

The Hologic Horizon Series Site Preparation Guide from October 2013 sets different minimums inside one product family. The Horizon A, Horizon W, and Horizon Wi need a room of at least 10 feet by 8 feet. The Horizon C and Horizon Ci need a room of at least 8 feet by 8 feet. Remove obstructions before the install date.

The GE enCORE Safety and Specification Manual, revision 3, May 2009, does not match those rooms. A full-size Lunar iDXA has a recommended room of 13.2 feet by 11 feet. Those are not the same room. Use the guide that matches the serial number.

The Hologic console cable and the power cable are each 15 feet. Both leave the left rear corner. Do not run either cable across a hallway. The Horizon floor must be level to within 1 inch across 6 feet. Tape the footprint, including the transfer side, before you sign. Peripheral units still need their own site guide and state registration.

Hologic Horizon W and Wi At least 10 by 8 ft. Table 6.3 by 3.5 ft. Dedicated circuit. 14 A at 120 V. 15 ft cord.
Hologic Horizon C and Ci At least 8 by 8 ft. Same table footprint. Same Horizon circuit.
Hologic Horizon A At least 10 by 8 ft. Heavier table, 765 lb. Same Horizon circuit.
GE Lunar iDXA, full size Recommended 13.2 by 11 ft. Dedicated 20 A, 100 to 127 V. Isolated ground.
GE Lunar Prodigy, full size Recommended 12 by 12 ft. Dedicated 20 A, 100 to 120 V. Isolated ground.
GE Lunar Prodigy Compact 7.5 by 12 ft in 2009. A 2024 layout uses 12 by 8 ft. 2009: 20 A at 100 to 120 V. 2024 drawing: dedicated 120 V duplex.

Does a DEXA scanner need shielding or lead-lined walls?

In most cases, a central DEXA room does not get lead-lined drywall. That line is not a permit. Hologic states that leakage and scatter are low, so the console can sit in the same room. More shielding is not normally needed. State rules still vary. Talk with your radiation safety officer. GE states that a qualified physicist determines radiological protection. GE does not specify the barrier for you.

Patient dose is low, and it is model-specific. The International Atomic Energy Agency reports a spine plus femur DXA dose from under 1 microsievert to about 15 microsieverts. A chest radiograph is often 20 to 50 microsieverts. Some fan-beam systems approach that chest dose. Do not skip the survey because the dose is low.

Book the physicist before delivery. A shared wall with a full-day desk can change the result. A CT room is a different project. Read the Amber Diagnostics CT site plan checklist for that contrast. Do not copy a CT shielding spec onto a bone densitometer.

What are the power and environmental requirements for a DEXA?

Power is model-specific. Do not put every scanner on one 20 ampere assumption.

The Hologic Horizon guide calls for a dedicated, single-phase, grounded circuit. At 120 volts the listed current is 14 amperes. The outlet must be ready before the install date. The cord is 15 feet and exits the left rear corner.

The 2009 Lunar manual is different. The iDXA needs a dedicated 20 ampere circuit at 100 to 127 volts, with an isolated ground. Isolated ground and a plain dedicated ground are not the same note. Match the guide for the unit you buy.

Climate bands differ too. Hologic lists 59 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The 2009 Lunar manual lists 65 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. The 2024 Prodigy Compact study lists 64 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. All three list 20 to 80 percent relative humidity, non-condensing. Hold the range overnight. A swing can move phantom results.

A power-off of more than one hour on a Lunar system needs a one hour warm-up, then quality assurance, before patient work. A UPS is not a universal DEXA rule. Ask if the quote includes one. Hologic wants Ethernet within 6 feet of the computer. GE wants the computer in the same room as the scanner. No chiller. No cryogen.

What does DEXA delivery and install logistics involve?

Measure the path before you measure the room. A scanner that fits the exam room can still stop at a stair, an elevator, or a 29 inch door.

Hologic states that a Horizon system can pass a 30 inch doorway. A hallway of at least 45 inches makes the move simpler. The 2024 Prodigy Compact study lists the table at 79.1 inches long and 560 pounds. The crate is larger than the table. Ask the seller for crate size and shipping weight. A ground-floor office park often needs a liftgate truck, not a dock.

Finish the circuit, the data drop, and the flooring before delivery day. Inspect the crates before the driver leaves. Confirm the phantom and the manuals are in the shipment. A missing phantom stops calibration. If an older unit must leave, confirm removal as a line item.

How long does DEXA installation and calibration take?

Assembly is the short part. Acceptance is the long part.

When the room and the path are ready, placement often finishes in one day. The Amber Diagnostics buyer FAQ describes physical installation as about 4 to 8 hours. Treat that as a planning range for a ready room. It is not a promise for a blocked doorway. Calibration can finish the same day or the next day. After a long power-off, GE requires a one hour warm-up, then quality assurance, before patient work.

The baseline phantom scan sets the reference for later drift. ISCD Official Positions from August 2023 call for weekly phantom scans if the manufacturer protocol does not already set that cadence. Verify the phantom mean after any service. Quality control continues for the life of the system.

Replacement adds time. On the same model, ISCD describes 10 phantom scans before and after a hardware change. A different manufacturer needs a patient cross-calibration. ISCD describes 30 patients within 60 days. Skip that work, and you cannot compare numbers to the old machine. You then set a new baseline.

A missing physicist slot, a state file still in process, or no qualified operator will hold the first billable scan. A ready site often reaches a billable study in about one to three weeks. We will not quote a go-live date until the circuit, the doorway, and the operator are named.

Step Ready site What usually waits
Room, circuit, and path Finished before the truck No outlet, or a tight door
Delivery and assembly One day Crate damage or a missing phantom
Calibration and phantom Same day or next day One hour warm-up after a long power-off
Physicist and state file Booked before delivery Survey slot or registration time
First billable scan After the rows above No qualified operator

Do I need a certified technologist to run a DEXA machine?

You need a person who can legally operate the X-ray device in your state. You also need a person who positions patients the same way every time. State law is one test. Repeatable positioning is the other.

State rules decide who can energize the system. Call the state radiation control program before you hire. This article is not legal advice. ISCD calls the operator credential Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist (CBDT) and the clinician credential Certified Clinical Densitometry (CCD). A brochure precision number is not a substitute. Ask whether applications training is in the quote. Do not assume a training day or a warranty visit is included.

What licensing is required to operate a DEXA scanner?

Register the X-ray device with your state radiation control program. Many states also want a facility registration, a named supervising physician, an operator credential, and a physicist survey. The form and the fee differ by state. Call the program with the model and serial number before you sign. This article is not a permit.

Common CPT codes are 77080 for axial DXA, 77081 for a peripheral study, and 77085 for axial DXA with vertebral fracture assessment. Coverage comes from the payer and from CMS policy for that beneficiary. Read the contract before you treat accreditation as mandatory. After go-live, keep phantom logs and physicist reports.

How does Amber Diagnostics help with site readiness?

Amber Diagnostics sells refurbished bone densitometers, including Hologic Horizon, Hologic Discovery, GE Lunar iDXA, and GE Lunar Prodigy systems. We also help with site planning, delivery coordination, installation, and technical service. Compare pencil-beam and fan-beam systems before you lock the room. Then use the OEM guide for the serial number.

We can review the doorway path and coordinate placement and calibration. We will not promise a warranty term, a training day, or a go-live date that is not on your quote. If a line is missing, it is not included. Request a site planning guide from the contact page.

Conclusion

DEXA installation is simpler than CT or MRI installation. It is not automatic. Confirm the model-specific room, the dedicated circuit, the door path, a legal operator, and the state registration before you commit capital. Do that work first, and assembly can be a one day job.

Frequently asked questions

How long does DEXA installation and calibration take?

Assembly is often one day. A ready site often scans in one to three weeks.

Can a DEXA scanner go in an exam room?

Only if the room meets the site guide for that model. A Horizon Wi minimum is 10 by 8 feet in the 2013 Hologic guide. A full-size iDXA recommendation is 13.2 by 11 feet in the 2009 Lunar manual.

Does a DEXA scanner need a dedicated circuit?

Yes for the Hologic and GE models cited here. Horizon lists 14 amperes at 120 volts. The iDXA manual lists a 20 ampere circuit at 100 to 127 volts. Do not share the outlet.

Does a DEXA room need lead-lined walls?

In most cases, no. State rules still vary. A qualified physicist must confirm the room.

Who can legally operate a DEXA scanner?

State law decides who can operate the X-ray device. Many states call for a licensed radiologic technologist or a permitted limited operator. ISCD and ARRT credentials show added skill. They do not replace the state rule.

What if the new scanner replaces an older DEXA?

Plan cross-calibration or accept a new baseline. ISCD states that you cannot compare numbers to the prior machine if you skip that work.
